Obituary of Wilbur "Bill" Carl Huffman, Jr.
Wilbur ‘Bill’ Carl Huffman, Jr., age 93, the oldest son of the late Clara Louise and Wilbur Carl Huffman, was born in the old Cook hospital, in Fairmont WV on February 27, 1928. He passed away on February 21, 2022, while in hospice at New Braunfels, TX, supported by his son and daughter-in-law David and Sandra Huffman.
Bill graduated from Fairmont Senior High School in May 1946, following enlisted service in the United States Navy. He would go on to attend and graduate from Fairmont State College in May of 1951 with a BA degree in political science and a minor in history. He was an active brother in the Tau Beta Iota fraternity. Bill’s love of the outdoors and the American west would lead him to a career as a surveyor. During his life he would hold numerous responsible positions with both the Arizona Department of Transportation and California Division of Highways where he would rise to the position of Chief of Party. Bill worked overseas for several major US engineering firms; where duty assignments would take him to Algeria, Israel, Iran, & Zaire utilizing his skills on primarily infrastructure projects. After retirement, he would become a long-time resident of Green Valley AZ and, until his passing, Canyon Lake, TX.
While working in San Diego he would meet and marry Wanda May Hicks where they would share and raise a family together until her death in Salem, OR.
Bill worshiped, in his youth, at the Central United Methodist church of Fairmont, WV. He was an avid reader of books and novels. He also enjoyed the daily issues of the Wall Street Journal and other periodicals. He was a Freemason and a 60-year member of the Grand Lodge of Arizona. He held a great love for our nation and would often quote from the U.S. Constitution, it’s amendments, and the Federalist Papers.
He is survived by three children: David M. Huffman, Canyon Lake, TX, Robin Johnson, Salem OR and Medena Webb, Rio Vista TX and his youngest brother John B. Huffman, Oracle AZ. His brothers Benjamin E. Huffman, Shinnston WV and Robert Patterson Huffman of New Port Richey FL preceded him in death.
A memorial will be held at the Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, WV 26554, at 10:00 AM on the 25th of June to be followed by burial at the Viewpoint Cemetery, Rachel WV. The family extends an invitation to all friends and family members wishing to attend.
