Obituary of Dr. Paul Spiro Gotses
Dr. Paul Spiro Gotses, 95, passed away peacefully at his home Monday, September 26, 2016 with his loving family at his side. Dr. Gotses was born June 11, 1921 in Fairmont, WV, son of the late Spiro and Nettie Hale Gotses of The Palace Restaurant Fame. Paul is survived by his loving wife Margaret “Margi” Keener Gotses.
Paul attended Marion County Schools. He was a graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, attended Fairmont State College, earned a Bachelor of Science and two years of Medical School from WVU, and then earned his medical degree from MCV Medical College of Virginia, in Richmond, VA. He interned at Ohio Valley Hospital in Wheeling, WV. He served his general surgical residency training at Women’s Hospital of Maryland and John’s Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Gotses retired in 1995 after practicing medicine for 50 years. He loved his profession and being able to provide medical care and surgery for many generations of families in both Marion and Taylor counties. He served on staff of Fairmont General Hospital, Grafton City Hospital, Fairmont Emergency Hospital, and Veterans Hospital in Huntington, WV. He was physician for the miners at the Grant Town Coal Company. Upon finishing medical school he was commissioned as Captain in the US Army for the Medical Corp at the VA Hospital in Huntington.
Paul was a lifelong member of the Gateway United Methodist Church, previously United Methodist Temple Church. He was a member of the Marion County Medical Society, the Fellow American College of Surgeons, the Southeastern Surgical Congress, Phi Beta Pi Professional Medical Fraternity, and past member of the Elks Club of Fairmont.
Paul was an avid golfer, proud of his two holes-in-one, 1985 at Tygart Lake Country Club in Grafton, WV, and 1989 Fairmont Field Club. Paul especially enjoyed golf trips with is wife Margi and friends Dr. Mike Haislip and his late wife Betsy. He also enjoyed golf outings with his brothers-in-law and buddies Dr. Bob Hamliton, Dr. Fred Shaffer, Dr. Chi Meen Lee, and Dr. Frank Malamo.
He was very attached to his dogs “Misty” and “Molly” and recently a cat named “Sparky” who slept by his side. He also enjoyed feeding and watching the birds, deer, wild turkey and other frequent visitors to the backyard.
In addition to his wife, his is also survived by his son John Gotses, and daughter Mary Leann Gotses Beveridge both of Fairmont, WV. Step-children: Diana (Freddie) Salentro of Shinnston, WV and Darryl Helmick of Fairmont, WV; Grandchildren: Brian (Cathy) Gotses of Oil City, PA, Robert Gotses and John Paul (Meriah)Gotses both of Fairmont, WV, Michael, Julianne and Stephen Gotses all of Wheeling WV; Step-Grandchildren Joey Salentro of Shinnston, WV, Sierra (Brian) Walker of Houston, TX. Great Grandchildren Jesse Ragon of Pittsburgh, PA, Arron and Jordon Gotses, both of Oil City PA., Shawn Gotses of Fairmont, WV. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law Darrel (Mary) Keener of Florissant, MO and Jack (Jean) Keener of Greensboro, PA, as well as his sisters-in-law, Freda Scott, of Fairmont, WV, Nina Hayhurst of Morgantown, WV, Shirley (Carl) Hartley, Barbara “Pidge” (Tim) Haines, Carolyn (Cecil) McFarland of Mount Morris, PA, Marlyn Keener Thomas of Middleburg, OH. Extended Family David Crayton of Fairmont, WV, Connie Getz of Shinnston, WV, Ellen Gotses of Fairmont, WV and Marti Helmick, Bridgeport, WV; devoted niece, Rev. Jennifer (Bill) Ham of Roswell, GA, and several other nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Gotses was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Edna B. Keener, sisters, Helen (Mitchel) Rutherford and Colleen (Ray) Boyce, his son Richard Gotses. His previous wife and mother of his three children, Julia A. Gotses. Son-in-law, Gary Beveridge, step-daughter Lisa Helmick, Brothers-in-law William Scott, Robert Keener, Wilford “Biff” Hayhurst, and Frank Thomas, sisters-in-law Betty Haines, and Millie Keener; nephews, Randy Hartley, Leonard Rutherford, David Rutherford; nieces, Brabara Keener Perez and Carol Sue Haines; and a special great nephew, Andrew Donley
The Gotses family would like to thank his personal caregivers Vanessa Corley and Doris Gump and the staff of Hospice Care of Marion County for their compassionate care and guidance through this journey.

Friends and family may visit at the Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Road, Fairmont, WV on Sunday, October 23, 2016 from 12 noon until 2PM. In keeping with Paul’s wishes cremation services have taken place. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held in the funeral home on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at 2PM with Rev.
