Obituary of Betty June Compton
After an extended illness Betty June Davis Compton, 87, of Bridgeport, WV, went to be with her maker on December 21, 2016. Betty was born on December 21, 1929 in Fairmont to Carly Glenn Davis & Catherine Margaretta Wetzel Davis Jarvis. Betty was preceded in death by one brother, Carl H. Davis, her stepfather, James Curtis Jarvis, a husband, Andrew Joseph Stopiak and a brother- in- law, Victor Moccia. Betty recently celebrated 51 loving years with her husband, Otha Compton, Jr. Betty is survived by one sister, (Glenna) Jean Moccia of Bridgeport. She is also survived by two children, Cathy Egan of Bridgeport and Andrea Alfred of Clarksburg & two stepchildren, Gene Compton and his wife, Sherri and Judy Compton Way and her husband, Joe, all of Bridgeport. Betty leaves behind nine beloved grandchildren, Shaun Egan, Stephanie Iaquinta (Alfred) and her husband, John, Richard Compton & his wife, Carla, Jonathan Compton & his wife, Loretta, Michelle Compton, George (Sonny) Todd & his wife, Elizabeth, Carl Todd and his wife, Kim, Jason Todd and Kerrie Hyman. Betty is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren.
Betty came from a very humble childhood and began her employment as a telephone operator before joining with her husband, Otha, in the ownership & operation of Compton Lanes. Otha & Betty had a unique and special relationship that was an inspiration to those that knew them. They shared a love of golf, dancing, camping and attending WVU games in their RV, traveling and the outdoors, among many other things. Known for their look- alike style, their contagious laughter & witty exchanges made them a duo that others truly enjoyed being around. They were faithful members of Bridgeport United Methodist Church & could be found in their special pew each Sunday. Betty was a constant example of faith and grace and brought joy to many with her beautiful smile and kind heart. Betty, or Nonnie, as many loved ones knew her, was a loving, generous, classy and outgoing woman. She loved meeting new people and could make a stranger feel like family. She won championships as a nine-hole golfer at Bridgeport Country Club, was a member of the Clarksburg Women's Club and served in the Bridgeport Rotary Club. Many Rotarians remember her reigning as Valentine Queen for several years. In the summer she could always be found working in her many beautiful flower gardens as this was one of her favorite past times. Betty was also an excellent chef and baker. She was an animal lover and was especially fond of the family dogs, Misha & Chloe. She most enjoyed being surrounded by her family. May her legacy shine on through all those lives she touched. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to those women who assisted in her care during the last months of her life: Bridgette Blake, Dot Lucas, Betty Paqno, Savannah Blake, Nedra Forinash and Debbie Lipps, as well as hospice care.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Betty’s memory to Bridgeport United Methodist Church Permanent Fund, 251 Worthington Drive, Bridgeport, WV 26330.
Friends will be received at Ford Funeral Home, 215 East Main Street, Bridgeport, WV on Monday from 2:00 PM – 8:00 PM and at Bridgeport United Methodist Church, 251 Worthington Drive, Bridgeport, WV on Tuesday from 10:00 AM -10:45 AM. The funeral service will be celebrated in the church on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at 11:00 AM with Reverend Dr. Ken A. Ramsey presiding. The interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery, Bridgeport, WV.
